Haesong Hoetjip at Jumunjin Fish Market in Gangneung
A personal review of Haesong Hoetjip inside Gangneung's Jumunjin Fish Market, focused on reserved takeout omakase assorted sashimi, friendly pickup service, and generous condiments.

During a trip to Gangneung, I wanted to recommend a sashimi place where I got takeout from Jumunjin Fish Market. I chose Haesong Hoetjip because they had an omakase assorted sashimi menu. I love trying a variety of fish, so I searched hard, made a reservation, and visited. I was completely satisfied.

Haesong Hoetjip is located in Gangneung's Jumunjin Fish Market. When I visited in person, the market felt bigger than I expected. There were many things for sale, including dried seafood, sashimi, and snow crab. Since the sea is right in front, the fish everywhere looked very fresh.

When you enter Jumunjin Fish Market, there is a row of stall-style shops that only do sashimi takeout. If you go a little farther inside from there, you can see Haesong Hoetjip. Here, you can choose the fish you want and take it out, or choose menu items and eat inside.

The seafood is kept right in front of the shop like this. You can choose what you want and they prepare it right away, which made it feel trustworthy and extra fresh.

Omakase assorted sashimi, medium size.
I had already looked it up in advance, so I reserved the medium size of the omakase assorted sashimi and went to pick it up. Tip: if you plan to visit Haesong Hoetjip, I recommend reserving ahead. When I reserved and visited, pickup was convenient because they prepared it for the time I wanted, and they also included service extras. Traveling can involve so much waiting, so it was really nice to receive it right on time.

Inside, there were about five to six tables. I visited on a weekend, and even though it was still early evening, the place was full, including reserved seats. The interior was clean and nice, and the tables felt hygienic with the things you need already set up.

Reservation is essential. I made a mental note of that. I was told all of these were reserved takeout orders, so I was really glad I had reserved in advance. I picked it up right away and went straight back to the accommodation. The owner and staff were very kind. They checked the reservation order quickly and helped everyone receive their orders fast, so I left with a good feeling.

When I opened it back at the accommodation, I was impressed again. There was a cute note and a generous set of accompaniments. The peppers, garlic, and ssamjang came in a large container, so there was plenty. They also packed four soy sauce portions, two large packs of chojang, and lettuce. Inside the sashimi tray, there was plenty of wasabi, radish sprouts, ginger, and pickled rakkyo, which made it perfect for eating together. I also liked that they wrote the name of each fish on the sashimi. Since it was an omakase assorted sashimi order with many kinds, it was easy to know what I was eating. It seemed like there were about seven to eight types. Being able to try a variety of tasty and seasonal sashimi made me so happy.
Just look at this table setting. It was honestly the best. If I come to Gangneung, Haesong Hoetjip is a must for me.

I also bought squid sundae near the market and had it for dinner. If you are nearby, try squid sundae with sashimi too; they go well together. White wine and sashimi also paired surprisingly nicely. Of course, I could not leave out a drink, and this combination worked well.

First of all, I liked that the pieces of sashimi were not tiny. They were thick and large. I was eating with one friend, so I debated between the small and medium sizes. Since it was dinner and we were eating at the accommodation, I thought it would be sad if there was not enough, so I ordered the medium. It was absolutely the right choice. It was so delicious that we finished every single piece.

Another thing I liked was the ssamjang. It had sesame oil and minced garlic mixed in, and it was really tasty. I dipped the sashimi in it and also wrapped pieces with lettuce, and it made everything more savory and flavorful. Such a thoughtful detail.

These were the shrimp and whelks I received as service extras. Even though they were extras, they were so good. The shrimp were plump and nicely cooked, and they practically melted in my mouth. The whelks came out easily, so they were convenient to eat. Getting service items this good felt amazing. They were also great dipped in the chojang that came with the order.

I put one piece of each kind that caught my eye together for a photo, and everything was so delicious. It was fun to choose among the different types, and I think it tasted even better because I knew what each fish was. Next time I visit Gangneung, I will go back to Jumunjin Fish Market and find Haesong Hoetjip again. This was honestly one of the top foods I ate in Gangneung.
