Juwol Hogye: Anyang Izakaya With Beef Tendon Hot Pot

A local review of Juwol Hogye, an Anyang izakaya near Hogye Old Intersection with a Japanese-style interior, beef tendon hot pot, grilled pollack roe, and late-night hours.

I visited Juwol Hogye, an izakaya in Anyang. It felt precious because it was the only izakaya near my home. I had heard Juwol had many tasty menu options, so it took a while to decide what to eat.

It is in the Daeyoung Golden Tower building by Hogye Old Intersection. The softly lit sign on the first floor made it easy to find. The listed hours were 17:00 to 24:00, with last order at 22:30.

Inside, it looked like a real Japanese-style izakaya. The cozy atmosphere was one of the best parts. Small plates, sauce dishes, and cutlery were set out on a side table.

The call bell was a hand bell, with a note asking people to ring it only once. The restroom was a shared restroom inside the building, and it was cleaner than expected.

Order list: beef tendon hot pot and grilled pollack roe.

The night was a little chilly, so I wanted a hot soup dish. The front was opened wide like outdoor seating, which made the mood even better. I ordered the mild beef tendon hot pot and the salty grilled pollack roe.

After ordering, they brought fried rice cakes. They were coated with sugar and tasted sweet, nutty, and chewy, so I kept reaching for them.

The beef tendon hot pot looked impressive. It had plenty of tendon and meat, a handful of thin noodles, and a cute dumpling. The source says cabbage is usually included, but it was sold out that day, so mushrooms were used instead, which I liked.

One unusual point was that the broth came separately. You could pour in as much as you wanted, either making it soupier or letting it reduce into a thicker hot pot style.

As the hot pot warmed us up, the grilled pollack roe arrived. The cucumber slices were generously thick, and they gave plenty of mayonnaise and wasabi for dipping.

The pollack roe was mild rather than too salty. With cucumber, mayonnaise, and wasabi, it was a great combination. If I revisit Juwol, I would order the grilled pollack roe again and try the skewers next time.
