Beomgye Munhwa Jumjeom Sawol Review: Retro Pub

JUNG07/30/2024Anyang

Munhwa Jumjeom Sawol opened a Beomgye branch near Beomgye Rodeo. This review covers the retro interior, chicken-leg snack, pickled radish, mala-style meat jjamppong, service kimchi fried rice and a plan to return for spinach chicken.

The author was excited to hear that Munhwa Jumjeom Sawol, a favorite pub originally known to them in Ansan Jungang-dong, had opened in Beomgye. Since they previously had to go to Ansan to eat there, the Beomgye branch felt especially welcome.

Munhwa Jumjeom Sawol Beomgye branch is close to the center of Beomgye Rodeo. The source says to go up to the 4th floor of the Makejip building, where the entrance already looks hip.

The interior felt similar to the Ansan branch, with walls covered in Sawol posters. Because crispy chicken is a main item, the basic snacks were chicken-leg-shaped crackers and pickled radish.

The restaurant was decorated with a retro mood. Soft lighting gave the space atmosphere, and the author noticed a funny frog tissue holder that felt familiar from the other branch.

The space felt hip and atmospheric. Although it looked dark, the lighting kept it comfortable. Tables were wide, and window seats helped the room feel less closed in.

Order for the visit: mala-style meat jjamppong.

Since this was the first stop before more rounds, the group ordered only one menu item. The menu also had a review event offering kimchi fried rice, so one dish felt enough. The broth was deep, and the mala flavor leaned Korean rather than strongly numbing. Even a friend who dislikes the usual mala aroma enjoyed it because it tasted more like meat jjamppong with a light mala note.

The kimchi fried rice served as a service item made a strong impression. It came with cheese and a fried egg, and the author wondered why it was not on the regular menu. The flavor was oily in a good way, spicy, sweet and very satisfying.

The restaurant also brought another service dish and thanked the group for visiting. The author felt more thankful that the pub had opened in Beomgye and said they would return to try the spinach chicken next time.
