Pokpung Jangeo in Anyang Hogye-dong: Self-Grill Eel Review

JUNG03/28/2024Anyang

A Hogye-dong, Anyang eel restaurant review of Pokpung Jangeo, with self-grilled pre-seared eel, 1 kg pricing, side dishes, seaweed wraps, self bar, and parking notes.

Hi! Today my mom and I are going to eat eel for a nourishing meal.

There was a large eel restaurant at the intersection in front of my house. I had been curious every time I passed by, and I finally went.

The first floor is parking, and it looked like about eight cars could park there. The second floor is a galbi restaurant. The third floor is Pokpung Jangeo. I did not realize it when I came in, but after seeing the menu, it seemed like the galbi restaurant and eel restaurant may be run together.

The eel price here is quite low. The reason is that they do not grill it for you. They serve pre-seared eel, and you grill it yourself. If 1 kg is 33,900 KRW, that is pretty good, right? The menu unexpectedly had pork galbi on it too. Still, the menu explained how to grill eel well and how to eat eel deliciously, so I followed it.

Maybe because there is a table-setting fee, the side dishes came out better than expected. The green onion salad and pickled perilla leaves were especially tasty. Then the pre-seared eel came right out. Because it was already cooked to some degree, self-grilling was not very difficult for me.

Maybe because I visited in the early evening, the owner kindly cut the eel for us while serving it. It looked golden and delicious. I was worried it might burn, so I grilled it moderately, moved it to the edge, and cooked pieces a little more as I ate.

The instructions for eating eel said it tastes better if you lightly toast the seaweed and wrap the eel with ginger and sauce.

Just like this. After toasting the seaweed, the color came alive and it looked even more delicious.

If you need more side dishes, bring them from the self bar. I really liked how clean the self bar was. There was also kimchi soup there, which had not been part of the first table setting.

Water cups, soju glasses, and beer glasses were already prepared at the table. It had a slight company-dinner feeling. My mom and I promised to have just one bottle of beer.

At first we ordered 1 kg, but as we ate it felt a little short, so we added another 1 kg. If two people visit, I recommend either 1 kg of eel plus a side menu, or 2 kg of eel. I wanted to try the side makguksu too, but for the two of us, 2 kg of eel was too much.

The eel was very chewy. It felt quite fresh and good quality. Even though the price is lower because it is self-grill, the taste and quality did not feel lower, so I was satisfied. Since it is close to home, I think I will visit often.
