Yufuin Milch Cheesecake & Pudding: Weekend Opening Review

Hello! Today I’m sharing one of the best snacks I had in Yufuin: Milch cheesecake and pudding. I tried both the cheesecake and the pudding, and honestly, I couldn’t pick just one favorite. They were both so good. This is also a weekend “opening run” review, meaning I went right around opening time, so read on for the little tips I picked up.

Milch is located on Yufuin’s Yunotsubo main street. The posted hours are daily from 10:30 to 17:30. I visited on a Sunday at around 10:20, and there were already about five groups lined up in front of me.

I had attached Google Maps in the original post as well. They opened right at 10:30. There is no space to eat inside, so turnover was fairly quick because everyone was ordering takeout.

While waiting in line, I kept debating what to order and ended up choosing the matcha set. My mom and I both like matcha, and ordering only the original felt a little too plain. But chocolate also wasn’t really calling to me that day.

It seemed like the matcha items had not been out for very long, because there were quite a few promotional posters. Changing from the original pudding to matcha pudding was 60 yen. Since that is only about 500 Korean won, I’d recommend trying one if you’re curious.

As I got closer to the entrance, I could see them making the cheesecakes. Seeing them in person, the cakes were actually pretty small. The cakes and puddings were in the 200 to 300 yen range, which I thought was not bad for a tourist area.

I ordered the 1,300 yen matcha set and added one original pudding. With plastic bag packaging included, the total came out to 1,680 yen. Maybe because of the pudding containers, it was heavier than I expected. I had to get on a bus right after taking it to go, so I added a shopping bag. They put it in a paper bag for free, so if you’re eating it right away, you probably don’t need to add the extra bag.

I opened everything on the bus heading to Tenjin Station. It seemed like eating on the bus was okay as long as the food didn’t have a strong smell. I tried them one by one on the bus, and they were delicious. I seriously wished I had bought more. For the cheesecake, I chose the cold version. If you’re eating it right away, I heard the warm cheesecake is also good, so that could be a fun option to try. It was moist and tasty without being too sweet. At the very bottom, there was something with a soft bread-like texture, or maybe powdered sugar, and it worked really well together.

The matcha cheesecake also did not have an overpowering matcha flavor, so I think it would be easy for most people to enjoy. Compared with convenience-store pudding, the pudding tasted less sweet and had more of a clean, milky richness. The portion was a bit small, but it was still delicious. Maybe because it was handmade pudding, it felt smoother and deeper in flavor. There are lots of good snacks in Yufuin, but personally, I highly recommend having Milch cheesecake with coffee. It is also easy to take away. There is an extra charge, but cooler pack packaging is available. One more note: whenever I saw Milch while walking around, there was always a line. Still, it moved faster than expected, so if you plan to try it, the best move is to line up as soon as you arrive.
